Why Me? Why did this happen? Why does God let bad things happen to good people? Sometimes people go to the Bible for answers. In Romans 8:28, we read, “All things work together for good,” and that’s true, but sometimes that answer just doesn’t seem to fit. It seems too easy. Why can’t the Bible really dig in and wrestle with the tough questions?
Well, it does. Several different biblical writers ask the tough questions. We’re going to focus on one of them, an often-overlooked prophet named Habakkuk. Let’s turn to his book. If you go to Matthew and start flipping backward through the O.T., you’ll find it.
This book was written between 612-588 B.C. / The purpose of this letter was to show that God is still in control of the world despite the apparent evil of Judah and surrounding areas.
Somebody read 1:1-3
What problems does Habakkuk have?
Do we have any of these problems today?
What are some other issues that we face?
Based on these verses alone, what kind of relationship do you think Habakkuk had with God?
Somebody read verse 5
How does the Lord respond to Habakkuk’s complaint?
How do you think Habakkuk felt after hearing that?
What can we learn from this?
Habakkuk 1:5
- 1. Look – “Look among the Nations”
Look at what is taking place in your life. What could God be teaching you from this? What could be gained from your hardship? Last week we looked at “9 Answers Why God Allows Bad Things to Happen”, consider which one could apply to you.
- 2. Watch – “Watch – for what is about to take place”
Don’t sulk in your situation. Watch for opportunities to better the situation in spite of the circumstances. Keep your head up! Read Romans 8:28
Habakkuk 2:3
- 3. Wait – “Wait for it” It – 1:5
Trust in God, and realize that God does all things according to His will and His timing. Be patient, and have faith. “If it seems slow in coming, Wait patiently, for it will surely take place. – Hab. 2:3 NLT”
- 4. Be Astounded – “Be utterly astounded!” – 1:5
Be sure to praise God, and give Him the glory for working in your life. We should feel significant knowing that God loves us so much that He is willing to invest into us, and He started on the cross.
God sent His only son to die for us so that we might be delivered and have redemption. Without the blood of Christ our circumstances would be far graver. There may be some in here today that do not have a relationship with Christ, and if you don’t you shouldn’t be concerned with the world’s problems, because you have bigger issues to deal with right now. If you don’t trust in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Turn from your sins you are destined to an eternal life of turmoil. The hardships of this world cannot even be compared to that of an eternal hell.
No matter what you are going through, Look, Watch, Wait, and Be Astounded. And if you don’t have a relationship with Christ, start today by asking Jesus to come into your life and save you.
