Deer Fever

With deer season just around the corner, I have already got the fever.  I can’t wait to get out into the deer woods.  I just bought a new Mossberg 30.06 and I am ready to put it to use.  I’m planning on tuning up the Browning bow this weekend, followed by some time at the range.

deer articleLast year I had a bad season, but I am destined to get one this year.  Anyways, I blog about this, because my wife knows how I get about this time of year.  I get impatient, and I need to go out and kill something.  I got to be a man!! Argh argh argh… no just kidding.  In reality I enjoy the deer woods so much, because It is the one time a year where I get to get out alone with God in the great outdoors.  It is a very intimate time with me and God.  “Search your hearts and be silent.” Ps. 4:4  Because of this my wife sent me this article that was actually paid to be published in a local newspaper.  You have to read it to believe it.  Enjoy!  In the mean time, I think I am going to go out back and pick some venison jerky off of my jerky tree.  :)

Three and a half more weeks until I get my hunt on.

Refuge Super Bowl Party

super-bowl-2009I have to say that XLIII was one of the best Super Bowl games that I have seen in awhile.  I was originally rooting for the Steelers, but the day prior to the big game I decided to change my mind.  I didn’t really care for either team, but I was pretty confident that the Steelers were going to win.  I started thinking about the fact that if they did win they would take the title of “Most Super Bowl Wins” away from the Dallas Cowboys.  I couldn’t be cheering for that.  I also started thinking about Kurt Warner’s testimony, and that is why I switched teams.

I was really getting discouraged about the game with the Cardinals being down until in the fourth quarter they ran the football for a huge touchdown taking the lead.  Everyone in my house with the exception of a few started yelling and going crazy, but our joy quickly crumbled when the Arizona defense threw the game away.  It was a sad day in NFL History.

Besides the outcome of the game, it was an awesome night.  We had 12 teenagers all hyped up on caffeine at our home, which resulted into an energy packed night.  We had students having light saber / Nerf wars, playing video games, chasing our poor dog, and all kinds of other crazy things.  At one point I think they were trying to see how many people they could fit into a small bathroom.  To top it all off one of our students picked up our nervous dog, and it peed all over him.   We watched a 3D preview of Monsters vs. Aliens followed by a devotional from Ephesians chapter 6 titled “Put on Your Football Pads and Get In the Game”.  It was a blast I couldn’t have asked for a better Super Bowl party.  Below are some of the pictures.  They aren’t that great, because I took them with a camera phone, but you get the idea.

Another Bright Idea Gone Bad

boardI have been doing a lot of thinking here lately about captivating our culture, and reaching out to the young generation around me.  I really desire to reach more teens for Christ so I came up with this crazy idea to start skateboarding.  I drive by the Bentonville Skate Park from time to time, and I see tons of teens who need Christ in their lives.  What I didn’t realize was the price my body would have to pay to reach out to these teens.  I have read studies on ministering to skaters, and they can be very quick to dismiss anything you have to say; especially if you are not in tune with their lifestyle.  I think that this can relate to all areas of culture.  My heart is burdened for the lost souls that skate that vert ramp every day, and the last thing I want to do is distort their perception of Christianity.

So check it out.  The other night I was trying to ollie in my living room (that was my first mistake) on the new Mongoose board I bought, and I was getting pumped.  I was starting to get the feel for the board, and I started experimenting. (that was my second mistake)  Sure enough in an attempt to ollie I came down and my board went up.  It flew straight out from under my feet into the air throwing me to the ground.  I’m surprised our floor didn’t come crashing in.  It was like a woolly mammoth being brought down by a spear, or a beached whale belly flopping.  THUD!!  My life flashed before my eyes.  My son sat amazed at my stupidity, and my wife came in frustrated with the fact that I was skating in the house.  She didn’t care if I was hurt.  I think it was because I was setting a bad example for Kaleb.  “No skateboarding in the house.”  In my pain I realized my favorite quote:  “Where there is no sacrifice, there can be no victory.”  My body was the sacrifice, and the reward would be the opportunity to lead a skater to Christ.  So when you get thrown from the horse you have to get back on, or something like that.  Anyways, I am bound to keep trying.  Who knows maybe I will become a pro or if not maybe a skater clown.  What are some ways that you are reaching out to the culture around you?  The Bible tells us to go and reach out into this world.  In Acts. 26:16-18  we are given the recount of Paul’s conversion:

“Rise and stand on your feet; for I (Christ) have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you.  I will deliver you from the Jewish and Gentile people to whom I now send you.  To open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified (set apart) by faith in Me.” – Jesus

Good news is I went with my youth group to the skating rink today, and I didn’t fall once.  What now?  Anyways, I will rise above the board.  Maybe I should first start with staying on it.

This following skateboard video is so me:

Slinky

slinky“SOME PEOPLE ARE LIKE SLINKIES; NOT REALLY GOOD FOR ANYTHING……..BUT THEY BRING A SMILE TO YOUR FACE WHEN YOU PUSH THEM DOWN THE STAIRS. “

Leave it to my wife to send me this quote.  She probably feels that way about me sometimes.  Many times we get so caught up in things that aren’t necessarily bad, but they just don’t glorify God, nor do they further His kingdom.   When that happens we can become useless, and it takes someone to push us down some stairs for us to wake up.

Don’t get me wrong, it is ok to enjoy life and have fun, but don’t let it control your life.

By the way a Slinky is a perfect Christmas Gift, and a great stocking stuffer.  Kids love them!

Man vs. Wild Round 3

Well we have come to almost the middle of the season, and my luck has gotten me no where.  All of my friends are ahead of the game, and I am dragging behind.  The winds of luck are about to turn my way.  I went hunting on Saturday, and all I got was wind.  I thought for sure it had to die down at some point, but it didn’t.  Anyways, I am going to go again on Thursday & Friday, and I am going to claim me a deer.  I feel so redneck saying that right now.

I will keep you posted, but until then you have to watch this video it is hilarious. Be advised some rednecks might take offense to this video. I don’t care who you are this video is funny.
